Ghana FA Launches Insurance Scheme To Strengthen Welfare For Referees

The President of the Ghana Football Association, who also serves as 2nd Vice-President of CAF, Kurt Okraku, has introduced a new insurance scheme designed to enhance the safety and welfare of referees working across Ghana’s major leagues.

The initiative was officially rolled out on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, fulfilling a promise he made during the 31st Ordinary Session of Congress at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in August.

Under the programme, all 280 referees in the men’s Premier League, Division One League and the Women’s Premier League have been signed onto a comprehensive policy arranged by the GFA.

The cover includes Group Life insurance, support for critical illnesses, benefits for permanent disability, medical expense assistance and Workmen’s Compensation.

Additional provisions extend to referees’ families, offering spouse, child and parent benefits, as well as funeral support for dependents.

“This is not just an insurance policy; it is a social protection package… It is a statement that the GFA cares deeply about its referees, their families and their future,” Kurt said.

“It represents our firm belief that referees should not struggle to access the essential gear required for their work.”

The Association has also renewed its long-running collaboration with STC Coaches, ensuring officials continue to enjoy a 50% reduction on travel to match centres.

Alongside these welfare measures, the President revealed ongoing efforts to improve officiating quality nationwide.
