Steven Gerrard Critiques Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Departure to Real Madrid

Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard has expressed his disapproval of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s recent transfer to Real Madrid.

The England defender caused a stir among Liverpool supporters after deciding to let his contract expire last season, making the move to Real Madrid as a free agent.

Gerrard’s Perspective

“I wouldn’t have made that choice,” Gerrard stated on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast. “He took a significant gamble. He is an exceptional talent, one of the best playmakers I’ve ever witnessed.”

Gerrard continued, “He’s certainly in the same bracket as (David) Beckham and (Paul) Scholes. However, leaving Liverpool at such a critical point in his career, especially when he was being offered a new contract, was a big risk. He’s facing the consequences of that decision now. I genuinely hope it pays off for him because I have a lot of affection for him.”

“Removing my Liverpool bias, there’s something to be said for any player caught in the crosshairs of interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid. That sort of opportunity is hard to ignore. I felt the same when Real Madrid approached me during Jose Mourinho’s time,” he added.

Reflections on the Real Madrid Interest

Gerrard elaborated, “That interest was tempting. Although it didn’t gain as much noise compared to the Chelsea situation, it definitely caught my attention. The allure of clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona is undeniable, even for fans of other teams like Manchester United. When these giants come calling, it’s hard not to take notice.”

Gerrard expressed empathy for Trent’s situation, indicating, “I can understand why he chose this path, especially with his close friend (Jude Bellingham) now there. Perhaps he’s seeking a new challenge after achieving everything at Liverpool. I partially get that rationale.”

However, he quickly reverted to his loyalty to Liverpool, stating, “But then, from a Liverpool fan’s viewpoint… what are you thinking? You’re part of one of the top teams in Europe, claiming titles that I still aspire to achieve. You’re winning European Cups and are a key figure. The fans cherish you. Why would you leave? But this perspective comes from my love for Liverpool.”
