Young Gladbach Star Attracts International Interest
A Promising Start in Munich
In early March, there was little for Borussia Mönchengladbach to achieve during their match in Munich. However, one player from the Foals still found a reason to celebrate. Wael Mohya, who came on as a substitute, took advantage of a rebound from Chiarodia’s shot that hit the post, netting a consolation goal and marking his first score in the Bundesliga during his eleventh appearance.
Rising Talent on the Field
Since that match, the young player has been receiving increased playing time, allowing him to gather valuable experience in Germany’s top league. This development is not only advantageous for Gladbach but may also have repercussions at the international level, as reports suggest that the Moroccan football federation has already reached out to the promising talent.
National Team Choices Looming
In a recent interview with kicker, Mohya confirmed, “There has already been contact, yes. But I can’t say any more about it.” This raises the possibility of the German Football Association (DFB) potentially losing another coveted player. The DFB has faced similar situations in the past, with numerous players, due to dual citizenship, opting to represent other countries instead of Germany. For instance, just a few weeks prior, dual-national Paul Wanner chose to play for Austria.
Mohya, who has Moroccan heritage yet was raised in Germany, has been involved with the DFB youth teams since the U16 level. He is currently part of the U18 squad, gearing up for the first round of qualifications for the 2027 U19 European Championship. The team is set to compete against Bosnia and Herzegovina (March 25, 1 p.m.), Israel (March 28, 1 p.m.), and the host nation Austria (March 31, 3 p.m.).
Future Uncertain
It remains to be seen if Mohya will get more playing time during these upcoming matches and whether that could influence his decision to represent Germany at the international level.
