HSV’s Charisma Persists Despite Years in the Second Division

Despite spending seven years in the 2nd Bundesliga, HSV maintains its allure. Even a national team player has expressed admiration for the club.

Successful Return to the Bundesliga

With a 2:1 triumph over 1. FC Heidenheim, Hamburger SV has officially marked its return to the top tier of German football last weekend. Robin Gosens, a player with 24 caps for the German national team and a Champions League finalist, has voiced his admiration. Speaking on the Copa TS podcast with host Tomi Schmitt, the left-back, who currently plays for AC Florence, praised the club, saying, “Such a great team,” reflecting on the Heidenheim match.

Enthusiasm for HSV’s Bundesliga Comeback

The excitement surrounding HSV’s return to the Bundesliga resonates with Gosens. Back in May, shortly after the team secured promotion, he remarked how fitting it felt to witness HSV back in the top flight. Now, he commented, “It’s truly poetic that they are back in the First League – such a prominent club from this beautiful city.”

A Hard-Fought Victory

The initial success of the current season was a challenging task for the Hamburg side. After Heidenheim missed several high-quality opportunities, goals from Mario Vuskovic (42nd minute) and Rayan Philippe (59th minute) set Merlin Polzin’s squad on the path to victory. However, a late goal from Adam Kölle (90+3 minutes) made the Volkspark Stadium hold its breath. Gosens noted, “They really had to endure a lot towards the end. But it’s all good as it is.”

Caution Against Relegation Risks

Gosens also offers a word of caution. Months ago, he highlighted that facing immediate relegation would be disastrous. Hamburg must steer clear of the dreaded drop that plagued them in 2022 and 2023. “In that situation, your legs automatically feel ten kilos heavier,” Gosens warned.
