Gerardo Seoane of Young Boys Issues Apology for Fan Violence During Aston Villa Incident
Young Boys Manager Expresses Regret Over Fan Violence at Villa Park
The manager of Young Boys has publicly apologized for the violent behavior exhibited by the team’s supporters during their Europa League match against Aston Villa on Thursday evening.
Aston Villa secured a 2-1 victory thanks to two goals from Donyell Malen, who sustained a head injury from objects thrown by Young Boys fans.
The away supporters were also involved in altercations with law enforcement at Villa Park, leading to a five-minute suspension of the match. Young Boys captain Loris Benito attempted to diffuse the situation, but Joel Monteiro later scored a goal, only serving as a consolation.
Manager’s Apology
Young Boys head coach Gerardo Seoane expressed remorse regarding the incident involving fans but suggested that they may have been incited by Villa players celebrating their goals in front of the away supporters.
Seoane noted that some fans descended from their seats to engage with the players, which the police misinterpreted as an attempt to encroach onto the pitch, escalating the situation.
He stated, “It’s natural for fans to want to celebrate with their teammates after a goal. Perhaps it was a slight provocation, though I’m not sure. Our fans might have interpreted it that way. While emotions run high in football, they should not respond with aggression.”
The coach shared that the officiating crew requested Benito’s assistance to calm the fans. The interaction with the players was misunderstood by authorities, leading to unnecessary chaos.
“It’s unfortunate that items were thrown. The outcome of the match is disappointing for everyone involved,” he remarked. “We apologize for this behavior. It does not reflect how we wish our supporters to behave as guests. In this scenario, nobody wins.”
Seoane emphasized that football stirs emotions, and while provocation is not intended, the joy of scoring can sometimes lead to misunderstandings.
Villa Boss Comments on Incident
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery refrained from commenting extensively on the unsavory events during the first half but remarked that such incidents were “unnecessary.”
He emphasized the need for mutual respect, stating, “It is vital to maintain respect for both parties. We should avoid situations like what we witnessed today. I hope Malen is alright.”
Player Updates
Emery noted that Malen is showing signs of rapid improvement, celebrating his sixth goal of the season. He said, “He is making significant strides. He’s getting fitter and recently played with the Netherlands national team. What is most important is his performance and his commitment to improving, which includes fulfilling the tactical roles we expect from him. His contributions on the scoreboard are fantastic.”
Malen is continuing to perform well and contributing effectively to the team’s efforts as they advance in the competition.
