FSA Survey Reveals 75% of Premier League Fans Oppose VAR System

Survey Reveals 75% of Premier League Fans Disapprove of VAR, According to FSA

Overview of the Survey Findings

A significant majority of supporters in the Premier League are against the implementation of the video assistant referee (VAR), as highlighted in a recent survey conducted by the Football Supporters’ Association (FSA).

Survey Details

Nearly 8,000 fans participated in the survey, expressing their perspectives on VAR’s impact on their matchday experience.

  • 90% of respondents believe that VAR has not enhanced their enjoyment during matches.
  • 91% feel that it has detracted from the excitement of celebrating goals.
  • 94% disagree that VAR has made watching football on TV more enjoyable.

Thomas Concannon, the FSA’s Premier League network manager, voiced concerns regarding the negative effects of VAR on the game, stating, “Fans are frustrated with the excessive time involved in decisions, the perceived lack of accuracy, and the diminished spontaneity of the game.”

In response to the survey results, the Premier League acknowledged the necessity of enhancing the supporter experience to mitigate VAR’s impact. They emphasized that while fans mainly support the retention of VAR, there is a consensus on improving how it is utilized.

Depth of Fan Discontent Regarding VAR

The survey included fans from all 20 Premier League clubs, with a majority being regular attendees, as over half indicated they go to at least 15 matches per season.

Key Findings from the Survey Include:

  • 72% dispute the claim that VAR has increased refereeing accuracy.
  • 74% believe that the reasoning behind VAR decisions lacks clarity.
  • 86% are concerned about the potential expansion of VAR’s scope.
  • 72% are against utilizing VAR to verify corner kicks, and 52% oppose using it to check for correctly issued second yellow cards—both of which are set to be enacted at the upcoming World Cup.

Recent reports indicate a rise in errors made by referees and VAR decisions within the Premier League. Concannon noted, “We delve deeper into discussions about refereeing now, even though the purpose of VAR was to enhance accuracy.”

Although fewer than half of the surveyed fans view in-stadium announcements of refereeing decisions as improvements, the majority do not find them helpful for enhancing understanding of the decision-making process.

Support vs. Dissent: VAR vs. Goal-line Technology

Interestingly, despite widespread disapproval of VAR, 93% of fans support the application of goal-line technology in the league.

Perspectives on the Future of VAR

The possibility of abolishing VAR in the Premier League appears slim, with 19 out of 20 top-flight clubs voting in favor of maintaining it during a recent discussion, with only Wolverhampton advocating for its removal.

For VAR to be shelved, a minimum of 14 out of 20 clubs is required to back a proposal for its elimination. Meanwhile, an independent review panel estimated VAR’s accuracy rate for refereeing decisions has hovered around 96-97% since its implementation.

Final Thoughts

Concannon expressed disappointment over the lack of responsiveness from the authorities regarding fan concerns, saying, “Supporters’ grievances are often disregarded, despite being deemed essential to the game.” He emphasized the necessity for decision-makers to heed significant feedback regarding the enjoyment and integrity of football.
