Frauen-Bundesliga Recap: Jena Stuns Bayern, Freiburg Takes the Lead, Frankfurt Triumphs in Seven-Goal Epic

Frauen-Bundesliga Update: Four Teams in Close Contest

Following three rounds of matches, four teams find themselves tied with seven points at the summit of the Frauen-Bundesliga. Bayern Munich’s flawless start was disrupted unexpectedly, while Köln continues their search for their first point this season.

Jena Shocks Bayern Munich

Last season, Carl Zeiss Jena ended with just ten points, but they began this campaign by presenting a challenge to the top teams. After a narrow loss to the record titleholders VfL Wolfsburg, Jena managed to secure a point against Bayern Munich.

The 26-year-old coach orchestrated a resilient defensive performance, limiting Bayern’s chances throughout the match. The closest Bayern came to scoring was a shot from Pernille Harder that hit the crossbar.

Jena notched their first point of the season while Bayern registered their first draw of this campaign. On a side note, Bayern’s Klara Bühl and Harder finished 19th and 20th in the Ballon d’Or voting, respectively.

Freiburg Set to Face Bayern as Leaders

Bayern’s next challenge will be against Freiburg tonight. Under coach Edmond Kapllani, Freiburg has taken the lead in the league after a huge victory over newly-promoted Hamburger SV.

Freiburg netted six goals, including a brace from substitute Aurélie Csillag, scoring three times in the closing ten minutes to secure a 6-2 triumph. Meanwhile, Hamburg will aim for their first Bundesliga victory when they visit Leipzig on Thursday.

Late Goals Propel Wolfsburg and Bremen

Wolfsburg is another team currently with seven points after a tense match that saw Camilla Küver score a dramatic winner in the 97th minute, clinching a comeback victory over Köln. This late goal denied Köln their first point of the season, but they will have another chance on Wednesday against SGS Essen, who are also struggling.

In another pivotal midweek matchup, Wolfsburg will host unbeaten Werder Bremen. Bremen achieved a 2-1 win over TSG Hoffenheim thanks to a last-minute goal from Hungarian midfielder Emőke Pápai, while Selina Cerci scored her fourth goal of the season for Bremen, marking their first home win of the campaign.

Frankfurt Holds Off Late Rally from Leipzig

In the men’s Bundesliga, Eintracht Frankfurt experienced a 4-3 defeat against Union Berlin on Sunday. The following day, the women’s team mirrored the men’s outcome by defeating RB Leipzig with the same scoreline at Stadion am Brentanobad. Both teams entered the match with three points, following losses to Bayern.

Frankfurt found the net before the hour mark, with Swedish forward Rebecka Blomqvist scoring her first two goals since her summer transfer from Wolfsburg. Leipzig nearly managed a late equalizer but fell short.

Union Berlin Celebrates First Bundesliga Win

Union Berlin clinched their first-ever Bundesliga victory with two goals in the first half against SGS Essen. As a newly-promoted team, they will face fellow relegation candidates Carl Zeiss Jena later tonight.

Additionally, matchday three was highlighted by yet another late winner, as Loreen Bender scored in the 93rd minute to lead Bayer Leverkusen to a 1-0 victory over Nürnberg. Leverkusen will be up against Frankfurt on Thursday, while Nürnberg looks for their first win of the season when they travel to Hoffenheim.
