Former Real Madrid President Calderon: Florentino Fails to Find Successors for Kroos and Modric
Calderon Criticizes Real Madrid’s President Over Xabi Alonso’s Dismissal
Background on Xabi Alonso’s Termination
Xabi Alonso was let go on Monday following the team’s loss to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final, held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Calderon’s Remarks
Speaking before the Copa del Rey round of 16 loss to Albacete, which took place under new coach Alvaro Arbeloa, Calderon shared his thoughts with Stats Perform. He stated, “The team could have drawn or perhaps even won with ease.”
He noted that while the performance was decent, it appears that the ultimate decision to dismiss Alonso came from the president.
Concerns About Club Structure
Calderon expressed his concerns regarding the lack of a sporting director or meaningful football consultancy at Real Madrid. He emphasized that the president makes unilateral decisions, often bypassing any collective input.
He further pointed out that the planning for the team may not have been ideal, particularly in light of the challenges in the midfield following the departures of key players Luka Modrić and Toni Kroos.
“I would have urged Florentino to consult with the sporting director to understand why those involved were responsible for making sporting decisions. They are typically the ones who possess knowledge about these matters,” he concluded.
