Former Real Madrid GM Mijatovic: Xabi Lacks Connection with Players
Xabi Alonso Dismissed as Real Madrid Coach
On Monday, Real Madrid made a significant decision, parting ways with coach Xabi Alonso and appointing Castilla’s Alvaro Arbeloa to lead the team for the remainder of the season.
Mijatovic’s Insight on Alonso’s Tenure
In an interview with El Larguero, former player Predrag Mijatovic shared his views on the challenges Alonso faced during his short stint at the club.
Understanding the Disconnect
Mijatovic noted, “In my observation of several matches this season, it seems that the players struggled to grasp his methodologies and requirements. It appears that the disconnect was significant.”
He elaborated further, saying, “In numerous instances where Xabi adjusted the lineup, the players appeared puzzled. There were moments where you could almost see them questioning the moves made.”
Reactions from Players
“Take, for instance, the Super Cup final. Even though he tried to make tactical changes to enhance performance, it was evident that some players were left confused, with expressions that seemed to ask, ‘What should we do now?'”
No Blame on the Squad
Despite the coaching changes, Mijatovic emphasized that the blame does not lie with the players. He remarked, “While I believe the team did not fully connect with Xabi Alonso’s vision, it’s important to note that the players should not be held accountable. The initial chemistry between the squad and the coach just wasn’t there, particularly regarding the expectations set forth.”
