FIFA Bans Burundi’s Bimenyimana For Reckless Challenge On Kenya Keeper
Burundi international Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana has been handed a three-match suspension by FIFA following his dangerous challenge on Kenya goalkeeper Brian Bwire during a recent World Cup qualifier in Bujumbura.
The incident occurred when the 27-year-old striker, formerly of Kaizer Chiefs, attempted to connect with a cross but instead struck Bwire in the face with his boot.
The Harambee Stars goalkeeper was left with a deep cut above his eye and had to be stretchered off the pitch for medical treatment.
Initially, Bimenyimana was suspended for one game, missing Burundi’s next qualifier against Gabon.
However, FIFA has since reviewed the incident and decided to extend his ban to three matches.
The ruling means he will be unavailable for Burundi’s upcoming international fixtures, including the friendly against Zambia on November 18.
In addition to the suspension, the world football governing body imposed a fine of 5,000 Swiss Francs on the player.
Bimenyimana’s red card came just five minutes into the match, leaving his side at a disadvantage for most of the contest.
Despite the controversy, the forward has been in good form at club level, scoring four goals in nine appearances for Saudi Arabian side Jeddah SC this season.
