Julian Brandt’s Future: Transfer Speculations and Career Trajectory
Career Uncertainty
The future destination of the 48-time capped German international remains unclear. This week, there have been reports suggesting potential moves abroad, with clubs like Arsenal and Barcelona showing interest. The Bremen-born forward might be inclined to venture outside Germany for the first time, although he could also be tempted to make a return to the German team where he began his professional career.
Rise and Fall of Talent
When Brandt joined Lucien Favre’s Borussia Dortmund, he was regarded as a budding star with a market valuation of €50 million, seen as one of Germany’s premier talents. Having already earned 23 caps for the national team, he had notable moments during the lackluster 2018 World Cup, which led many Germans to believe that his trajectory would continue to ascend.
However, Brandt’s position in the German national setup fluctuated significantly. He has earned just 25 caps in the past seven years, and his market valuation has experienced significant ups and downs, plummeting from a high of €50 million in 2019 to a low of €20 million by August 2021.
Recent Developments
In a promising turn, Brandt managed to regain his form and elevate his market value back to €40 million in 2023 and 2024. Yet, in the last two years, he has seen his valuation drop again to the €20 million range according to Transfermarkt.
Brandt missed the opportunity to participate in the 2024 Euros, which was hosted by Germany, and he has only secured one major trophy (the 2021 DFB Pokal) during his time at Dortmund. Watching his former club, Bayer Leverkusen, lift the Bundesliga title for the 2023/24 season under coach Xabi Alonso might have been particularly difficult for the ex-Leverkusen star.
Support from Peers
“I think Julian Brandt is phenomenal,” stated Carro, reflecting the views of many Bundesliga journalists and fans, in an interview with DAZN. “If [B04 sporting director] Simon [Rolfes] wants him, I would fully support that decision.”
