Fernandes Opens Up About Departure from Man Utd to Saudi League: The Club Pushed for My Exit

Bruno Fernandes Reflects on Missed Saudi Move

Decision to Stay with Manchester United

Bruno Fernandes, the captain of Manchester United, has shared insights regarding his unsuccessful transfer to the Saudi Pro League. The Portuguese midfielder turned down lucrative offers from Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad last summer, choosing instead to remain with the Red Devils.

Financial Temptation

Reports indicated that Al-Hilal was willing to offer Fernandes £700,000 per week, which would have amounted to approximately £200 million over a three-year deal. Despite the substantial financial lure, Fernandes opted to continue his journey at Old Trafford, demonstrating loyalty to the club, in light of various challenges faced over recent years. In a conversation with Canal 11, the 31-year-old expressed that although the financial aspect was appealing, his commitment to Manchester United was paramount.

“I could have left like many others and said: ‘I want to leave, I don’t want to train, just give me €20m or €30m, and I’ll take that offer.’ But that was never my approach. I never felt right doing that, as my connection and affection for the club prevailed,” he stated.

Club’s Position and His Commitment

Fernandes acknowledged that the club seemed inclined to let him go, sharing, “I communicated this to the directors, but it feels like they lacked the resolve to make that decision.” With an impressive record of 103 goals and 93 assists in 307 appearances for the club, he appears determined to honor his contract, which extends until June 2027. He elaborated on the possible move, suggesting that the club was ready to benefit financially from his departure.

“I decided to stay for various reasons, including family, but mostly because I truly appreciate the club. The conversation I had with the manager reinforced my decision to remain. However, I felt a hint of indifference from the club, as if my departure wouldn’t be detrimental to them. That thought saddened me greatly,” he reflected.

“What pains me more than anything is feeling overlooked despite my unwavering commitment. I always make myself available and give my all, regardless of performance. It’s disheartening to witness others around me who may not value the club as I do,” he added.
