Fathi Jamal: Morocco’s U20 World Cup run is no coincidence

Royal Moroccan Football Federation Technical Director Fathi Jamal believes Morocco’s march to the FIFA U20 World Cup final is the result of years of hard work, not luck.

Speaking to FIFA, Jamal praised the young Atlas Lions for their consistency and spirit under coach Mohamed Wahbi.

He described their run to Sunday’s final against Argentina as “no surprise.”

“I’ve followed this team from the start and always believed in them,” Jamal said. “They earned this through teamwork, discipline, and the coach’s leadership.”

Jamal compared the 2025 generation in Chile to the 2005 squad he guided to the semi-finals in the Netherlands, highlighting a shared passion and pride in representing Morocco.

“Both groups play with heart and national pride. Their determination and talent set them apart,” he noted.

The young Moroccans booked their spot in the final after a dramatic 5–4 penalty win over France, sparking celebrations back home.

Before the showdown with Argentina, Fathi Jamal urged captain Othmane Maâma and his teammates to stay composed. “Remain calm and focused. You have the ability to finish the job and bring the trophy home,” he said.

A victory on Sunday would mark Morocco’s first-ever U20 World Cup title. A potential milestone in the country’s growing football legacy.
