Agueissa Diarra played a key role in leading Mali to the quarter-finals of the 2024 Wafcon, where they ultimately fell to Morocco, the hosts and eventual runners-up, by a score of 3-1.
Cameroon, Egypt, Ivory Coast, and Mali will finalize the roster for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) after the final four participants were determined using FIFA world rankings.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) opted to increase the tournament size from 12 to 16 teams as the qualifiers for next year’s event in Morocco progressed.
Reigning titleholders Nigeria and ten other teams secured their spots during the second and final qualifying round last month.
Teams eliminated in that round anticipated potential play-offs for a second chance to qualify for the tournament in North Africa.
Instead, CAF has utilized FIFA’s world rankings to fill the remaining slots, advancing the four highest-ranked teams that were defeated in the second round.
Thus, the teams Cameroon (ranked 66th), Ivory Coast (71st), Mali (79th), and Egypt (95th) will participate in Wafcon 2026.
Mali reached the quarter-finals in the postponed 2024 competition, while Cameroon, who have been finalists thrice, have not taken part since 2022.
Ivory Coast and Egypt will make their return after not qualifying since 2014 and 2016, respectively.
Although CAF has yet to announce the tournament dates, FIFA has indicated it is set to occur from March 17 to April 3.
CAF also has not provided a date for the draw.
The top four teams from next year’s finals will earn qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, while the losing teams in the quarter-finals will compete for two additional spots in an inter-confederation qualifier.
