An Insightful Move to Sevilla
Question: After two seasons with Atletico Madrid, what are your expectations for your new journey at Sevilla, and why did you choose this club?
Azpilicueta: “This summer was quite different for me after my contract with Atletico ended following the Club World Cup. I spent time preparing and looking for the right project. In discussions with Sevilla and the coaching staff, I sensed I could make a significant contribution, both on and off the field.
“The club has faced challenges in recent seasons, not meeting their usual high standards. I am here to help, and I hope we can achieve a positive season together.”
A Promising Start for Sevilla
Question: Sevilla is off to its best start since the 2021/22 season. Is the club on track to return to its former glory?
Azpilicueta: “It’s premature to make such claims. If we continue to work diligently every day, competing fiercely in training and matches, we recognize each player’s importance. Whether someone plays a full 90 minutes or just a few, every contribution counts.
“This is a lengthy season, and we must be prepared for our opportunities. I see a strong team spirit and a vibrant atmosphere in the stadium. Together, we can achieve significant milestones, but we must take it one step at a time.”
Reflections on the Recent Match
Question: Your last match against Barcelona was remarkable. How did you approach that game?
Azpilicueta: “At the end of the day, it’s about securing three points. We faced the reigning LaLiga champions, so we needed to maintain our focus. Historically, we haven’t won many home games since 2025. The atmosphere was electric, and we performed well, but we must keep up that intensity.
“We were conscious of not giving them too much time or space, given their ability to create chances, and that focus and energy enabled us to secure the victory.”
The Influence of Mathias Almeida
Question: What impact has Mathias Almeida had on the team?
Azpilicueta: “He has instilled a strong identity within the squad. Every training session is designed to reflect our desired style of play. We aim to play with intensity, minimize the opposition’s time on the ball to reclaim possession quickly, which allows our forward players to shine.
“Through the first eight matches, we have experienced both highs and lows, but securing results is critical. We must keep developing progressively.”
Comparing Coaches: Simeone and Almeida
Question: How would you compare Mathias Almeida to Diego Simeone?
Azpilicueta: “They both bring different qualities. Each manager I have encountered has a unique approach to the game, which enriches my understanding of football. With Mathias, I continue to have an open mindset, eager to learn from his perspective and contribute my experience.”
Diego Simeone’s Lasting Legacy
Question: Can you share something notable about Diego Simeone’s influence in the locker room?
Azpilicueta: “Simeone transformed the club’s trajectory since he joined Atletico in 2011. He led us to compete with the foremost clubs globally, achieving two league titles and reaching two Champions League finals.
“His dedication to the club is palpable, and managing at such a high level for an extended period is a testament to his impact.”
Reflecting on a Tough Loss
Question: How did it feel to be eliminated from the Champions League by Real Madrid during your time at Atletico?
Azpilicueta: “It was quite a blow. Over the two matches, we performed admirably and were close to advancing. The penalties were particularly disheartening. We left the field feeling a mix of sadness and frustration; we felt we earned our chance to progress.
“Ultimately, it’s a part of football, and all we can do is learn from it and strive for better in the following season.”
