Exciting Launch of Second Phase for Youth Female Referee Training in Prampram, Ghana by FIFA League Development
Training Initiative for Female Referees Launched
Introduction of the Program
The second phase of the capacity building initiative for the Catch Them Young (CTY) female referees, part of the FIFA Women’s Development Programme, began on Monday, October 13, 2025, at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence located in Prampram.
This program is an integral part of the Football Association’s ongoing mission to enhance the development of women’s football by reinforcing fundamental aspects of the women’s game. This includes a dedicated effort to recruit, train, and retain young referees nationwide.
Day One Highlights
The first day of the training was focused on familiarizing participants with the 2025/26 Laws of the Game, providing a solid foundation for understanding contemporary officiating standards.
Noteworthy attendees included Jennifer Amankwaa Sarpong (Women’s Football Development Manager), Alex Kotey (GFA Referees Manager), Christine Zigah (Chairperson, Referees Committee), Emmanuella Aglago (CAF and GFA Referees Instructor), Beatrice Thaud (Physical Instructor), and Delight Alorbu (Fitness Instructor).
In her introductory address, Jennifer Amankwaa Sarpong greeted the participants and outlined the training’s objectives. She noted that the course aims to empower young female referees with technical expertise, confidence, and leadership abilities essential for succeeding in their officiating careers, ultimately contributing to the ongoing advancement of women’s football in Ghana.
Key Presentations and Updates
A significant highlight of the day was a comprehensive presentation on the 2025/26 Laws of the Game, conducted by Alex Kotey and Beatrice Thaud. Mr. Kotey updated attendees on notable changes, including stricter regulations on player behavior, which limit interactions with referees to team captains in specific circumstances to minimize dissent.
He also covered revisions to drop-ball rules intended to foster fairness based on the ball’s location and possession, along with improved protocols for concussion substitutions and updates on VAR procedures. The session addressed a newly established “no-go zone” around referees to prevent encroachment by players during tense situations.
These updates aim to promote fairness, safety, and respect for officials during matches.
Upcoming Sessions
The training will proceed on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, featuring practical on-field sessions that concentrate on physical fitness preparation, positioning techniques, game interpretation, and decision-making while under pressure. Participants will also engage in physical conditioning and simulation exercises to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical application.
The GFA, through its Catch Them Young Refereeing Programme, is committed to nurturing a new wave of skilled, confident, and professional female referees. This initiative not only opens up career opportunities in officiating for young girls but also ensures the growth of women’s football in Ghana through well-trained officials dedicated to maintaining the integrity of the sport.
