Egyptian Goalkeeper Faces Suspension for Referee Assault
Incident Overview
Mohamed El-Shenawy, the goalkeeper for Al-Ahly, has received a four-match suspension due to an incident where he struck a referee after a 1-1 draw with Ceramica Cleopatra in the Egyptian Pro League.
Details of the Suspension
The international player from Egypt, who was on the sidelines for the match on Tuesday, became frustrated after Al-Ahly was denied a penalty for a handball in stoppage time.
In an official statement regarding his punishment, the league clarified: “A four-match suspension and a fine of 50,000 Egyptian pounds (£700) for assaulting the referee through pushing or pulling [using the hand without violence].”
At the age of 37, El-Shenawy was the primary goalkeeper for Egypt during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and is anticipated to be part of the national team in the upcoming World Cup, hosted in North America this summer.
Future Implications
As a result of the suspension, El-Shenawy will be unable to participate until the final stages of the league playoffs, where the top seven teams compete in a Championship round.
Defending champions Al-Ahly currently sit in third place following one match in the playoff round, holding 41 points, which is five points behind the leaders, Zamalek.
