Egypt U20 suffered a 2-1 defeat to New Zealand in their second match at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, leaving their qualification hopes in serious doubt.

The Young Pharaohs entered the game needing a positive result after losing their opener to Japan, but another disappointing performance pushed them closer to elimination.

Egypt started strongly and took an early lead in the 5th minute when Ahmed Khaled Kabaka struck a powerful shot into the net.

The goal boosted their confidence, and they controlled possession in the opening stages. However, their advantage lasted only eight minutes.

Luke Smith equalised for New Zealand in the 13th minute with a composed finish, shifting momentum.

Just three minutes later, Luke Juan capitalised on defensive lapses to put New Zealand 2-1 ahead.

The quick turnaround unsettled Egypt, and they struggled to regain control before halftime. In the second half, they pushed forward in search of an equaliser.

Moataz Mohamed came close with a header, and Omar Khedr caused problems with his direct runs.

Despite their pressure, Egypt failed to convert their chances.

Goalkeeper Ahmed Wahba produced several vital saves to keep his side in contention, denying New Zealand further goals.

However, Egypt’s attack lacked sharpness, and they could not break through a disciplined defence.

The defeat leaves Egypt bottom of Group C with zero points from two matches, having also lost 2-0 to Japan.

New Zealand, who lost to Chile in their first game, now sit level on three points with Japan and Chile.

Egypt must beat Chile in their final group match to keep a slim chance of advancing to the round of 16.

Only the top two teams from each group and the four best third-placed teams will progress.
