Gabriel Zakuani urges caution as DR Congo close in on 2026 World Cup return

Former DR Congo captain Gabriel Zakuani says the Leopards must remain focused despite standing on the brink of a first FIFA World Cup appearance in more than five decades.

DR Congo defeated continental giants Cameroon and Nigeria in this month’s playoff fixtures, leaving them one win away from returning to the global showpiece for the first time since 1974.

Their final obstacle will be an inter-confederation playoff in Mexico next March. They will face either Jamaica or New Caledonia for a place at the 2026 tournament.

Zakuani told BBC Sport Africa that while the draw is favourable, the team cannot afford to relax.

“It’s a positive draw because, on paper, we are the stronger side,” the 39-year-old said.

“We beat Cameroon and Nigeria, so there’s a danger of taking things lightly or becoming overconfident.

But with the way Sebastien Desabre has set up the team, nothing should be assumed.”

He stressed the significance of the moment and urged the players to grasp the opportunity.

“We need to reach the World Cup. We haven’t been there since 1974. And that is far too long for a country of DR Congo’s size and footballing history.

This is a huge chance,” he added.

Qualification would see DR Congo join a record 10 African nations at the 2026 World Cup, the continent’s highest-ever representation at the tournament.
