Discovering Jamaldeen Jimoh

Who is the ‘shy and nervous’ match-winner Jimoh-Aloba for Villa?

Aston Villa’s match-winning hero, Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba, has been characterized as “shy and nervous” by his teammate Morgan Rogers. Nevertheless, the young talent has made a striking impression on the European stage.

Late Goal Seals Comeback Victory

The 19-year-old’s crucial late goal secured a 3-2 comeback win for Villa against Red Bull Salzburg, ensuring they secured second place in the Europa League group stage. As the match concluded, Amadou Onana encouraged Jimoh-Aloba to celebrate with supporters at the Holte End, leading to a chorus of cheers from the fans.

With Ollie Watkins sidelined due to a hamstring injury and Villa trailing 2-0, Unai Emery’s squad desperately required a game-changer. Jimoh-Aloba, who made his Premier League debut last month, came onto the field in the 66th minute and scored the decisive goal just three minutes before the end, following earlier equalizers from Rogers and Tyrone Mings.

After the match, Jimoh-Aloba shared his joy with TNT Sports, expressing pride in his European debut and the opportunity to make his family proud. “I have experienced both highs and lows this season, but this moment stands out. My mum is somewhere in the stands,” he reflected.

‘I’ve Taken a Shine to Him’

England playmaker Rogers, who attended the same academy as Jimoh-Aloba at West Bromwich Albion, has faith that the young star will become more confident. “This is a great moment for him. He puts in a lot of effort during training. While he might be a bit shy, he demonstrates his talent there,” Rogers stated.

He added, “We recognize his potential; it’s about him staying focused and engaged. Young players often struggle with consistency, which can lead to difficulties, but he’s shown determination since stepping on the field.”

Emery entrusted 18-year-old midfielder George Hemmings with his full debut while academy graduate Kadan Young also participated. “It’s vital to provide young players with opportunities to showcase their growth,” stated Emery. “I believe they all performed admirably. We have a developmental plan for them, focusing on their training and game time like today.”

Who is Jimoh-Aloba?

The young midfielder joined Aston Villa from West Brom in 2023 at the age of 16 and had already represented England at under-16 and under-17 levels. He made his senior debut in September 2024 during a Carabao Cup match against Wycombe and found himself in Villa’s Premier League squad against Leicester a year earlier.

In October 2024, he signed a long-term contract with Villa and played a pivotal role in their FA Youth Cup triumph last season, scoring in the final against Manchester City. Jimoh-Aloba made his league debut last month in a 4-1 loss to Arsenal and also participated in a Carabao Cup match against Brentford in September.
