Christian Dingert’s Controversial Referee Decisions Impact FC Bayern Against Bayer Leverkusen
Referee’s Performance Sparks Outrage
Referee Christian Dingert had a significant impact on FC Bayern’s Bundesliga match against Bayer Leverkusen with several contentious calls—this isn’t the first instance of such controversy.
A performance described by Uli Hoeneß in the BILD newspaper as “the worst officiating I have ever witnessed in a Bundesliga match” led to widespread indignation across Germany on Saturday.
Key Decisions in the Match
During the match, Dingert ruled out two of FC Bayern’s goals, which raised questions regarding his judgment. Both disallowed goals were attributed to supposed handball violations.
- The first incident involved Jonathan Tah, whose arm made contact with the ball before he scored.
- The second instance saw Harry Kane partially deflect a shot from Jannis Blaswich with his elbow, which Dingert also deemed a handball offense. These verdicts surprised many, not just FC Bayern supporters.
In a subsequent incident, Luis Díaz received a yellow and red card for an alleged foul that occurred after he stumbled during a challenge with Blaswich.
A Pattern of Controversy
Dingert’s performance on Saturday wasn’t an isolated occurrence; FC Bayern fans have previously voiced their discontent over his officiating. In a March 2025 match against VfL Bochum, his decisions led to significant debate.
As reported by kicker, he failed to issue a straight red card to Bochum defender Jakov Medić for a foul on Leroy Sané that resulted in a penalty kick. Medić, who should have been penalized as the last defender, scored shortly afterward, helping his team take a 2-1 lead at halftime.
In another contentious moment, a Bayern player—Joao Palhinha—was shown a direct red card after a clean tackle, a decision described by kicker as “through no fault of his own.” Additionally, a theatrical fall by Bochum’s Tom Krauß after a minor contact added to the drama of the match.
