Desmond Criticizes Rodgers Following Resignation: Controversial and Self-Interested

Celtic owner Desmond slams Rodgers after resignation: Divisive and self-serving

Dermot Desmond Critiques Brendan Rodgers Following Resignation

Celtic’s main stakeholder, Dermot Desmond, has expressed his discontent towards Brendan Rodgers after the latter stepped down from his managerial role on Monday.

Rodgers left his position as manager of the Hoops following a loss to Hearts, who currently top the Scottish Premiership.

Interim Management

In the wake of this development, Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney have been appointed as interim managers at Parkhead.

In a strong reaction, Desmond stated, “I want to recognize Brendan’s contributions during his two tenures as Manager, which helped achieve a level of success that is a significant part of the club’s contemporary history.”

However, he added, “I must also voice my profound disappointment regarding how the last few months have progressed. When we reappointed Brendan two years ago, it was with full trust and confidence in his capacity to guide the club into a new era of enduring success.”

Desmond continued, “Regrettably, his behavior and communication over the recent months have not aligned with that trust. In June, both Michael Nicholson and I indicated to Brendan our interest in extending his contract, signifying the club’s unwavering support and long-term dedication to him. He mentioned needing time to consider it and promised to get back to us. Yet, in later press conferences, Brendan suggested that the club had not committed to a contract extension. This was simply not accurate.”

“We have met with Brendan on several occasions, including last December and at the beginning of summer, with ongoing discussions in between to align our mutual strategy, priorities, and plans.”

“Every player acquisition and sale during his tenure was executed with Brendan’s full awareness, consent, and support. Any insinuation to the contrary is entirely false. His subsequent public remarks regarding transfers and club operations appeared to be unexpected.”

Given Authority Over Decisions

Desmond noted, “At no point before those comments did he express any such concerns to me, Michael, or any member of the Board or executive team. In truth, he had final authority over all footballing matters and was continually supported in the recruitment process, which included significant investments in players he explicitly identified and approved. After his public comments, I made it a point to address them directly. Brendan and I had discussions for more than three hours at his residence in Scotland regarding the matter.”

“Despite having numerous chances, he was unable to pinpoint any instance of the club hindering or not backing him. The realities did not correspond with his public claims. Unfortunately, his subsequent words and actions have been divisive, deceptive, and self-serving.”

“They have fostered a hostile environment around the club and intensified negativity towards the executive team and the Board. Some of the hostility directed at them, including their families, has been utterly unjustified and intolerable.”

“Every member of the Board and executive team is deeply committed to Celtic and conducts themselves with professionalism, integrity, and a collective aspiration for success. The recent failures have not been due to our organizational structure or model, but rather one person’s quest for self-preservation at the expense of others.”

“Celtic’s framework—where the manager oversees football-related matters, the Chief Executive manages operations, and the Board offers oversight—has been effective for the club for over twenty years. We all share a common goal: to ensure Celtic’s ongoing success in domestic competitions and to make further strides in Europe.”

“All revenue generated by the club is reinvested toward these objectives and the continuous enhancement of Celtic Football Club.”

“Celtic transcends any individual. Our current priority is to restore unity, bolster the team, and continue to develop a club that embodies its values, traditions, and supporters.”
