Tottenham’s Cristian Romero Receives Extended Suspension Following Red Card Incident

Additional Sanctions Imposed

Tottenham Hotspur’s captain, Cristian Romero, has been handed an extra one-match suspension along with a £50,000 fine due to his conduct during the team’s recent match against Liverpool. This decision stems from actions taken during the game that led to his red card.

Breakdown of Events

Romero acknowledged a charge from the Football Association related to his failure to leave the field promptly after he was dismissed in the final moments of the game on December 20th, where Tottenham lost 2-1.

  • Second Yellow Card: Romero was penalized with a second yellow card for kicking out at Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate following a foul against him.
  • First Booking: His first caution was issued for dissent in the 66th minute.
  • Confrontation with Referee: Allegations also included that he acted in a confrontational and aggressive manner towards the referee.

After a review, an independent regulatory committee concluded that Romero should face an additional one-match ban and the monetary penalty.

Previous Suspensions

Prior to this ruling, Romero had already missed Tottenham’s 1-0 triumph over Crystal Palace due to the automatic one-match suspension that followed his red card. Additionally, he was sidelined for the 2-1 loss to Fulham earlier in the season due to accumulation of yellow cards.

A representative from the Football Association has stated that a detailed written explanation of the latest penalties will be released soon.
