Courtois of Real Madrid Reflects on Liverpools Victory: We Needed More Energy

Real Madrid keeper Courtois questions Liverpool winner: But we lacked spark

Courtois Expresses Disappointment Following Madrid’s Defeat to Liverpool

Real Madrid’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois expressed his disappointment following his team’s narrow 1-0 loss to Liverpool in the Champions League.

Courtois’ Stellar Performance Amidst Defeat

Despite putting forth an excellent effort, Courtois found himself on the losing end of the match Tuesday evening.

The Belgian shot-stopper shared his thoughts after the game, stating, “It’s unfortunate, as I did my best to keep the team competitive. We committed too many fouls around the area in the second half; Liverpool is quite effective with set-pieces, and that’s how they scored. Overall, I felt we defended adequately, but we struggled to bring flair into our attacking play.”

Need for Improvement

Courtois emphasized the challenges faced during the match, saying, “Getting into advantageous positions was tough, and when we did, we often lost possession too easily. There’s definitely room for improvement in that aspect. This stadium is known for being one of the most challenging venues in the Champions League. Sometimes, losses happen, though it’s never something we accept lightly. Upcoming, we have two more matches before Christmas: a tough away game against Olympiakos and then hosting Manchester City. We have to push forward.”

He also reflected on the fouls made by his team, commenting, “Some of our fouls were avoidable, while others were necessary to stop what could have turned into a dangerous counter-attack. The foul that led to their goal seemed a bit unnecessary; I don’t even think it was a foul as he went down after spotting Bellingham’s foot. Nevertheless, it was a well-delivered cross, resulting in a good goal.”

Analyzing the Game and Future Opportunities

Courtois further assessed the match, stating, “We were not precise with our passing and found it difficult to keep possession in the opposing half. This is an area we must enhance to compete effectively against top teams, especially on the road. While we are very strong at home, we certainly need to work on our performance away from home against formidable opponents.”

He concluded with, “Coming to this venue is always a tough challenge, and losses can happen. It’s crucial to maintain composure, as we are in fairly good shape. Following our La Liga matches, we must secure a win against Olympiakos in the Champions League. This away fixture will be challenging, but if we secure the victory, we will still be well-positioned to reach the knockout stages.”
