Chelseas Next Manager Ahead of Crucial Man City Showdown

Chelsea Moves Forward After Managerial Change

Chelsea Football Club commenced the new year by making a significant decision regarding their management.

Departure of Enzo Maresca

As the echoes of fireworks faded, the club announced the exit of manager Enzo Maresca. Under his leadership, Chelsea secured two trophies in 2025 and successfully returned to the top four. However, management felt it was vital to “reorient the season,” resulting in the premature end of his 18-month stint.

This decision, though proactive, is slightly inconvenient given the busy festive fixture schedule. The announcement of Maresca’s departure coincided with a rundown of nine matches planned for January.

The busy month kicks off with a challenging match against title contenders Manchester City. Given Maresca’s connections to the Manchester club, who are reportedly considering him as a successor to Pep Guardiola, this upcoming match has added tension.

With Maresca no longer at the helm, the question arises: who will lead Chelsea moving forward?

Candidates for Interim Manager Position at Chelsea

In their brief statement regarding Maresca’s departure, Chelsea indicated that it was a mutual decision, stating, “Enzo and the club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track.” However, the statement did not mention any immediate successor plans.

The situation regarding Maresca’s coaching staff remains unclear. The former manager had brought along six assistants during his appointment in 2024. Among them, former Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero has been a prominent figure, stepping in during Maresca’s absence due to disciplinary reasons.

Reports suggest that U21 coach Calum McFarlane may be tapped for the interim role. McFarlane was appointed just six months ago, transferring from Southampton’s youth teams, and has past experience at Manchester City, where he worked alongside Maresca.

Potential Replacements for Enzo Maresca

The search for a new permanent manager is actively in progress. Club executives are optimistic about finalizing a successor within days. Liam Rosenior from Strasbourg has emerged as a leading contender, especially considering the club’s ties to the Ligue 1 team.

Other names floating in discussions include Andoni Iraola from Bournemouth, who is set to be a free agent, along with high-profile figures such as Xavi Hernández and Cesc Fàbregas. While Oliver Glasner from Crystal Palace was initially a candidate, recent reports indicate he is no longer in contention.

Given the circumstances, it appears unlikely that a permanent appointment will occur before the upcoming match against Manchester City.
