FIFA called off the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier between Malawi and Equatorial Guinea after the visiting side failed to travel to Lilongwe due to a dispute with their football federation over travel arrangements.
The game, scheduled for Thursday evening at the Bingu National Stadium ended in cancellation after Equatorial Guinea’s players allegedly refused to board their flight.
Reports indicate that the team learned about changes to their travel schedule at the last minute.
This forced them to choose between arriving just hours before kickoff or preparing for the match while airborne.
African football journalist Micky Jnr reported growing frustration among players, who cited “poor travel coordination” as the main reason for their refusal.
Even after officials resolved the logistical issues, the players remained unwilling to travel. This inevitably led to the match’s cancellation.
In response, the Equatorial Guinea Football Federation (FEGUIFUT) suspended head coach Juan Micha. For to his role in the no-show, while the Ministry of Sports demanded an explanation from players.
Meanwhile, the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) expressed regret over the situation and confirmed FIFA’s decision to cancel the fixture.
“The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) wishes to inform the general public that the FIFA World Cup Qualifier between Malawi and Equatorial Guinea will not take place. Due to unforeseen travel complications affecting the visiting team,” FAM said in a statement.
“FIFA has officially cancelled the match. FAM will provide further updates on the status of tickets that were purchased in advance. We sincerely regret any inconvenience this development may cause.”
The Flames, who are still in contention for a World Cup play-off spot, remain in third place in Group H.
They have 10 points, level with Equatorial Guinea and just a point behind Liberia.
Malawi will next face São Tomé and Príncipe on Monday. While Equatorial Guinea host Liberia on the same day.
