Champions League Returns to Camp Nou as UEFA Approves Barcelonas Match with Frankfurt

UEFA Authorizes Historic Return to Camp Nou for FC Barcelona

Barcelona’s Venue Shift

Since 2023, FC Barcelona has not utilized the Camp Nou for its matches, instead playing at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium. Recently, the club confirmed that they would host their upcoming match against Athletic Club at their famed home, exciting fans who have been waiting for updates regarding their European fixtures.

UEFA’s Special Approval

This week, UEFA granted the team special clearance to make a venue switch during the ongoing competition. On Wednesday morning, the club made the announcement:

“FC Barcelona confirms that the sixth match of the Champions League phase, set for Tuesday, December 9 at 9:00 PM against Eintracht Frankfurt, will take place at the Spotify Camp Nou,” the official statement read.

The decision follows the club’s successful acquisition of the first occupancy license for Phase 1B, which permits a larger attendance and includes the full lateral area, supplementing the previously granted Phase 1A license that covered the Main Stand and South Goal. This development became possible after UEFA approved the request, acknowledging that all necessary conditions were fulfilled.

A Long-Awaited Return

This will be the first time in 1,140 days that a Champions League match is held at the Camp Nou, which is currently under an extensive £1.3 billion renovation project.

UEFA stipulated two essential operational conditions: a live audience for the nationally televised game and a designated away section comprising 5% of the venue’s total capacity. According to reports, inspectors will conduct an assessment at the stadium on November 29 during the match against Alavés to ensure that everything is in order.

Player Excitement

Winger Marcus Rashford expressed his enthusiasm over the announcement, having previously shared his ambition to play at this iconic stadium.

“It’s a wonderful feeling. It’s a stunning arena, and when it’s filled, it will be remarkable. Camp Nou has always been one of my favorite stadiums, and I’ve dreamed of playing there. To be on the pitch with Barcelona will be an entirely unique experience, and I can’t wait,” Rashford said.
