CFR Cluj has ended talks to sign Moroccan international Hakim Ziyech after medical tests revealed a knee problem.

The decision marks another setback for the 32-year-old, who remains without a club as the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations approaches.

Ziyech, currently a free agent since leaving Galatasaray in May, continues to search for a new team to reignite his career and return to Morocco’s national squad.

His absence from recent call-ups has raised concerns about his form and fitness ahead of the tournament in his home country.

Cluj had initially reached an agreement with the former Chelsea winger, offering a contract worth €2.5 million.

The Romanian side viewed Ziyech as an experienced addition who could strengthen their attack.

However, the deal collapsed after the club’s medical team expressed concerns about his left knee.

“Hakim Ziyech has a problem with his left knee,” said the club president. “He’s a good player, but too risky for €2.5 million.

After watching him at Galatasaray, he seemed to play with fear. We are withdrawing from the negotiations.”

The outcome mirrors Ziyech’s recent struggles in the transfer market. Several clubs, including Botafogo, Heerenveen, Gençlerbirligi, Elche, and PSV Eindhoven, previously held talks but also withdrew interest after assessing his condition.

This latest rejection leaves Ziyech in a difficult position, just months before the Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in Morocco on December 21.

Reports suggest the player now plans to take time with his family to consider future options and explore new opportunities.

For now, Ziyech’s future remains uncertain, as he works to find a club willing to take a chance on his proven talent and experience.
