O’Neill Expresses Disappointment Over Trusty’s Ban, Remains Optimistic About Signings
O’Neill’s Reaction to Trusty’s Ban
Interim manager Martin O’Neill expressed his disappointment after the Scottish FA’s fast-track tribunal dismissed Celtic’s appeal regarding a red card issued to player Auston Trusty in a match against Heart of Midlothian. Trusty was involved in a controversial incident where he took down Hearts striker Pierre Landry Kabore. The referee, Steven McLean, initially issued a yellow card, but after a review by the video assistant referee (VAR), the card was upgraded to red after determining that Trusty had denied a clear goalscoring opportunity.
This decision was significant as it allowed Hearts to equalize in the match, maintaining their six-point lead over the reigning champions in the Scottish Premiership.
Celtic’s Response and O’Neill’s Comments
Celtic announced plans to engage in further discussions with the Scottish FA to gain clarity on the reasoning behind this decision and others that have raised questions. O’Neill, who disagreed with the red card decision from the outset, noted that he received support from various referees after the incident.
He jokingly remarked about his experiences with officiating standards in Scotland and mentioned that he has some personal concerns that he’s addressing.
Focus on Squad Strengthening
Looking ahead, O’Neill acknowledged that Celtic needs to improve its roster as the winter transfer window approaches. “We are working hard to finalize a few signings,” he stated, expressing hope that new arrivals will be made before the weekend. He emphasized the urgent need for a robust squad, particularly with crucial matches ahead in the Europa League.
“We have a pressing timeline, but I am optimistic we can secure some quality players,” he said, noting the necessity for depth as the team prepares for potential knockout games.
Upcoming Match Preparation
Celtic’s next challenge will be against Utrecht in the Europa League, where a victory would guarantee their place in the knockout phase. Currently, the Scottish champions sit in 24th place in their group and must secure a win to advance. O’Neill has confirmed that striker Kelechi Iheanacho participated in training and is available for the upcoming match.
“The situation is clear: we simply must win,” he stated, underscoring the importance of the game. O’Neill acknowledged the challenge posed by Utrecht, who lack pressure and can play freely, making them a potentially dangerous opponent.
“It’s crucial to make it to the knockout round. Each European fixture offers valuable experience and growth,” he added.
