CECAFA Suspends Executive Director Auka John Gecheo

Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations, (CECAFA) suspended Executive Director, Auka John Gecheo, following an executive meeting chaired by Acting President Alexandre Muyenge.
In a press release dated Monday, 22nd September 2025, CECAFA announced that the council confirmed the decision after a consultative meeting involving presidents of seven member associations: Burundi, Eritrea, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, and Somalia.

According to reports, the suspension comes amid growing concerns about governance and accountability within the regional body.
Executive Director Gecheo faced criticism over tournament scheduling, communication with national associations, and a perceived lack of transparency in decision making.
Member Association included his suspension as part of broader reforms they hope will restore trust and efficiency in CECAFA’s operations.
The governing body is responsible for organizing inter-association tournaments, youth competitions, and coordination with CAF and FIFA.
The leadership structure includes a President, Executive Director, and a council of member associations, making Gecheo’s role central to daily operations.
No official has made a statement on when Gecheo will return or permanently replaced.
