Carragher Claims Diaz Departure Isnt a Major Blow for Liverpool

Liverpool’s Luis Diaz Departure: A Non-Issue, According to Jamie Carragher

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher firmly believes that the sale of Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich during the summer transfer window hasn’t hindered the team’s performance.

Carragher’s Take on Diaz’s Exit

There are many in the football community who consider Diaz’s transfer as a factor in Liverpool’s current struggles this season. However, Carragher offered a different perspective during his appearance on The Overlap.

He indicated that the club’s management likely made a strategic decision regarding Diaz’s contract, stating, “That’s where I think the hierarchy of the club has said Arne Slot is (only) the head coach. Arne Slot might’ve wanted to keep him.”

Managing Contracts Wisely

Carragher elaborated on the reasoning behind the decision: “They (the Liverpool hierarchy) said he’s 28; if we give him a new contract, he’ll be on significant wages.”

He emphasized that it was a wise move for the club: “It was a good deal for Liverpool, and he’s going to look good in the Bundesliga because it’s not as competitive as the Premier League.”

Assessing Diaz’s Impact

While Carragher acknowledged Diaz’s contributions, he also pointed out, “Diaz was a very good player for Liverpool, but he wasn’t extraordinary. He wasn’t Firmino, he wasn’t Mane, he wasn’t Salah.”

He concluded his assessment by stating, “He was a good player; Liverpool got some solid years out of him and received a fair price—it was a beneficial deal for Liverpool.”

Carragher admitted that the club has yet to find a replacement for Diaz. Still, he expressed optimism about new signing Florian Wirtz, saying, “If Wirtz becomes what we hope him to be, he’s a different player, but he’s that player between the lines to the left, so you’ll get that from him.”
