Niko Kovac Reflects on Time at Hamburger SV Ahead of Bundesliga Clash
Fond Memories of Hamburg
Niko Kovac donned the Hamburger SV jersey for two seasons and will rekindle his connection with the club when his Borussia Dortmund team competes against them in the Bundesliga on Saturday (March 21, 6:30 PM). The 54-year-old recalls his time there with affection, stating, “I have many fond memories of that time.”
Career Statistics
During his tenure at HSV, Kovac participated in 73 matches, achieving a record of 13 goals and five assists. However, it’s not just the statistics that linger in his memory. In a conversation with the HSV.de editorial team, he expressed, “I had a wonderful time at HSV and felt very comfortable in Hamburg: a great city and a big club.” He also shared a significant personal milestone: “My daughter was born in Hamburg.”
European Experience
Kovac also made his mark on the European football scene with Hamburger SV. In the 2000/01 season, he played six matches in the Champions League. One game stands out distinctly in his mind: a thrilling encounter against Juventus Turin. After a fiercely contested 90 minutes at the Volksparkstadion, the match ended in a spectacular 4:4 draw, during which Kovac temporarily gave his team a 4:3 lead.
Memorable Match Against Juventus
In reflecting on this match, Kovac describes it as “one of the most defining and exciting” of his career, emphasizing, “Not just because of the result, but also the incredible atmosphere surrounding the game. I always like to think back to this match and will never forget it.” Unfortunately, despite their efforts, Hamburg finished third in the group and were relegated to the UEFA Cup, where they faced early elimination in the third round against AS Roma.
Observing HSV’s Progress
Kovac is keeping a positive outlook on his former club’s progress. “As a promoted team, HSV is having a good season so far and will also look for their chance against us,” he noted. He anticipates a challenging match, stating, “I expect us to face a compact, well-organized defensive opponent, similar to the first leg.”
Recent Encounter
In their previous meeting in Hamburg, Borussia Dortmund seemed poised for victory after Carney Chukwuemeka’s goal (22). However, the match took an unexpected turn when Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer equalized in the seventh minute of stoppage time, ending the game in a 1:1 draw.
