Burkina Faso have secured a timely boost ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, officially granting citizenship to Kouassi Arsène, a move that clears the way for the promising defender to represent the Stallions at the tournament.
The decision, taken during the Burkinabè Council of Ministers meeting on October 23, comes just two months before the AFCON kicks off.
It’s a step by the Burkinabè authorities to ensure one of their most exciting young prospects is eligible to feature for the national team.
The 21-year-old left-back, who currently plays for Lorient in the French Ligue 1, has impressed this season with his energetic performances.
Since joining the club from Ajaccio in July, Kouassi Arsène has appeared in all eight league matches, contributing one goal and an assist.
Originally born in Côte d’Ivoire, Kouassi’s football journey began at New Stars in Ouagadougou, where his raw talent caught the eye of national selectors.
He earned his first call-up to the Stallions in March 2025 and made his international debut a few months later in a friendly defeat to Tunisia.
However, administrative complications had kept him from competing in official games, a situation now resolved following the government’s decisive action.
The Burkinabè Football Federation sees this move as a victory for their youth system and a signal of intent heading into AFCON 2025.
Kouassi’s inclusion is expected to bolster the Stallions’ defensive depth, a department that has long needed fresh energy and stability.
