A total of 32 goals lit up the Bundesliga during Matchday 4, with Bayern Munich continuing to lead the pack thanks to Harry Kane’s hat-trick. Borussia Dortmund kept pace following their victory over Wolfsburg, while Union Berlin and Mainz also enjoyed commendable wins. Notably, Hamburg celebrated their first win in Germany’s top division since May 2018, ending a lengthy seven-year wait.
Player of the Week: Team Selection
Every Monday, our team will present the standout performers from the Bundesliga in our Team of the Week.
GK: Noah Atubolu (Freiburg)
The German youth international played a crucial role in Freiburg’s second victory of the season. Atubolu made five key saves, notably blocking a penalty from Romano Schmid – marking his fifth consecutive successful penalty save, a record in the Bundesliga.
RB: Julian Ryerson (Borussia Dortmund)
With Nico Schlotterbeck back in action after a five-month hiatus, Julian Ryerson shifted from a three-man defense to his favorite right wing-back spot against Wolfsburg. The Norwegian was highly influential, creating four chances, touching the ball 96 times, and assisting Karim Adeyemi for the lone goal in the match.
CB: Jeff Chabot (Stuttgart)
Chabot’s formidable presence in defense made it nearly impossible for opposing players to get past him. The Stuttgart defender won 11 duels, the highest in Friday’s match against St. Pauli, and had 5 interceptions along with 5 recoveries, while also moving the ball effectively into the final third.
CB: Luka Vušković (Hamburg)
Despite the common refrain about loan players, Hamburg supporters are likely to be enamored with the 18-year-old Luka Vušković on loan from Tottenham. The central defender scored the opening goal against Heidenheim while completing 54 passes and winning 8 duels, contributing significantly to HSV’s first Bundesliga win in over five years.
LB: David Raum (RB Leipzig)
After facing criticism towards the end of last season, David Raum redeemed himself with an impressive performance against 1. FC Köln, netting a stunning free-kick and creating three additional chances, showcasing his impact on the game.
CM: Kaishu Sano (Mainz)
The Japanese midfielder continues to shine this season, playing a key role in Mainz’s 4-1 victory over Augsburg, where he scored a goal and provided an assist. Sano topped the match with four successful dribbles, underlining his importance in Bo Henriksen’s side.
CM: Chema Andrés (Stuttgart)
Selected over club captain Atakan Karazor, Chema Andrés made his mark with 76 touches, two created chances, and an 87% passing accuracy. Defensively, the 20-year-old contributed significantly, with 15 defensive actions as he settles into his new environment.
AM: Vincenzo Grifo (Freiburg)
Freiburg’s resurgence this season has largely been due to Vincenzo Grifo, who contributed with a goal and an assist while creating two scoring opportunities. Despite a minimal 31 touches, his effectiveness was evident against Werder Bremen.
AM: Oliver Burke (Union Berlin)
The Scottish forward delivered what could be his finest performance yet, scoring a remarkable hat-trick against Eintracht Frankfurt. Displaying his speed, Burke found the net in style, with his third goal showcasing great composure.
ST: Andrej Ilić (Union Berlin)
Although Ilić didn’t score, his three assists for Oliver Burke were crucial in the match. Known as the most fouled player between the two teams, his presence was a substantial factor in Union Berlin’s offense.
ST: Harry Kane (Bayern Munich)
Kane was on fire against Hoffenheim, scoring an impressive first goal followed by two penalties. This marks Kane’s ninth hat-trick since joining Bayern, making him the first player in Bundesliga history to successfully convert his first 17 penalties.
