El Mala’s Commitment to Cologne
Southampton will not be able to re-engage in discussions for Bundesliga forward Said El Mala in the upcoming January transfer window, as he has stated his intention to remain with FC Cologne after the winter period.
Southampton has recently shown signs of improvement following a rough beginning to their season, positioning themselves back in the playoff chase. Will Still was dismissed from his managerial role prior to the international break in November, having secured only two victories out of thirteen Championship matches. Tonda Eckert, the former Under 21s coach, took over and started his tenure with four consecutive wins.
With a playoff berth appearing achievable, Southampton is now contemplating how to strengthen their roster ahead of the January transfer window. However, one of their targets from the summer has already expressed that he will not be transferring to St. Mary’s should they revive their interest.
El Mala Affirms His Stay at Cologne Despite Southampton Interest
This summer, Southampton had reportedly expressed significant interest in acquiring El Mala from Cologne and had even submitted a substantial offer for his services, which ultimately did not lead to a transfer.
Concerns arose within the German club regarding the possibility of Southampton returning for El Mala in January, especially given his impressive performances lately.
The 19-year-old forward has already netted five goals and provided two assists in just 12 Bundesliga matches, only four of which were as a starter. Köln’s head coach Lukas Kwasniok has praised El Mala, referring to him as “a street footballer with innate talent”, which has certainly raised the expectations surrounding this young talent.
Nonetheless, El Mala has made it clear that he will not be moving clubs in January. In an interview with Kicker, he acknowledged the speculation, saying,
It’s normal for young players who perform well in the Bundesliga to attract interest from several clubs. I appreciate the recognition of my performance, but I am entirely focused on FC Cologne and intend to stay here through the winter transfer window.
There are also rumors linking Bayern Munich and Brighton to El Mala, and with his contract at Cologne lasting until 2030, any future transfer may involve a significant fee.
A Missed Opportunity for Southampton?
El Mala could have been an invaluable addition to Southampton’s squad, especially given his potential to thrive in the Championship. His scoring prowess demonstrated in the higher tier could have provided a much-needed advantage for Eckert during the latter half of the season.
It’s unfortunate for Southampton, as El Mala is expected to be out of their reach now, making it a missed opportunity for the team looking to enhance its performance at St. Mary’s.
