Bundesliga Matchday 8 Recap: Leipzig Scores 6, Frankfurt Holds Strong Defense, Stuttgart Triumphs Again and More
Bundesliga Matchday 8: Highlights and Insights
It was another weekend filled with excitement and goals in the Bundesliga as teams showcased their form and some continued to seek their first victory of the season. Below are the main takeaways from matchday 8.
RB Leipzig on a Winning Streak
Reflecting on Leipzig’s opening match, which ended in a 6-0 defeat, it appears they have made a complete turnaround. Last weekend, Ole Werner’s team managed to score six goals against FC Augsburg, signaling a departure from their earlier struggles.
The players are now demonstrating cohesive teamwork and an aggressive playing style, positioning themselves as serious contenders at the top of the table. Featuring six distinct goal scorers in their match against Augsburg, Leipzig’s match saw 19-year-old Assan Ouédraogo emerge as a notable talent.
After a tough season marred by injuries where he only made 59 appearances, Ouédraogo has now become integral to the squad, participating in all eight Bundesliga matches this season and contributing four goals (two goals and two assists), with a goal and an assist during the recent game against Augsburg.
After the match, Ouédraogo commented, “Everyone is running for each other, and the wins are obviously good. We’re incredibly stable at the moment and performing as a unit.”
Next, Leipzig faces Energie Cottbus in the second round of the DFB Pokal before competing against VfB Stuttgart on Saturday.
Frankfurt Bounces Back with a Clean Sheet
Following a tough 1-5 defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League, Frankfurt was desperate for a turnaround, having allowed 23 goals over the last six matches. However, they managed to achieve a solid 2-0 victory against St. Pauli, marking a commendable recovery for Dino Toppmöller’s team.
One standout was summer acquisition Jonathan Burkardt, who netted both goals in the match and could be positioning himself as a contender for a spot in Germany’s national team. Since moving from Mainz, Burkardt has found his stride, scoring six times in seven Bundesliga appearances and achieving his second brace in as many matches.
Germany has been struggling to find a reliable striker, and while options like Nick Woltemade and Kai Havertz may top the list for the upcoming US tour, Burkardt’s recent form could see him challenge for a place on the team.
Stuttgart’s Winning Ways Continue
Despite a recent setback in the Europa League, Stuttgart remains undefeated in the Bundesliga with five consecutive wins, placing them third in the league. They triumphed over Mainz 05 with a narrow 2-1 victory, although forward Deniz Undav confessed the performance was not particularly impressive.
“It was ugly,” Undav revealed in his post-match comments. “We knew that we just had to keep running and running until the right moment came. I was pretty exhausted by the last six or seven minutes.”
The decisive moment came unexpectedly when Stuttgart’s goalkeeper Alexander Nübel sent a long ball toward Undav. Mainz defender Stefan Bell miscalculated, allowing Undav to capitalize and score. Nübel notched his second career assist in the Bundesliga with that play.
While the win may not have been aesthetically pleasing, it’s a positive sign for Stuttgart to win even when not playing at their best. Stuttgart retains third place, while Mainz is struggling in 16th position with just one win to date.
Matchday Roundup
In other Bundesliga action, TSG Hoffenheim surprised fans with a strong 3-1 victory over FC Heidenheim, climbing to seventh place and inching closer to the European competition spots. The team is experiencing a remarkable recovery after battling relegation in the past few seasons.
Bayern Munich continued their strong start by defeating 10-man Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-0 at Borussia Park. Despite being reduced to ten players in the first half, Gladbach’s effort was commendable. Goals from Kimmich, Guerreiro, and Lennart Karl clinched the win. The young Karl, only 17, had a standout week, scoring his first Champions League goal midweek and following it up with his inaugural Bundesliga goal.
Borussia Dortmund secured a late win against FC Köln, maintaining their position in fourth place, thanks to Maximilian Beier’s goal in the dying moments of the match.
Additionally, there were victories for Werder Bremen (1-0 vs. Union Berlin), VfL Wolfsburg (1-0 vs. Hamburger SV), and Bayer Leverkusen (2-0 vs. SC Freiburg).
