Ailton Reunites with Long-Lost Top Scorer Trophy
A Journey Through Triumph and Loss
Werder Bremen’s recent history would be incomplete without the remarkable contributions of Ailton. During the 2003/04 season, he dominated the Bundesliga, netting 28 goals and playing a pivotal role in clinching both the league title and the DFB-Pokal.
As a fitting acknowledgment of his achievements, he was awarded the prestigious top scorer cannon. However, this cherished trophy eluded him for nearly 20 years.
The Dispute and the Missing Trophy
Since 2006, Ailton’s beloved trophy was lost due to a heated conflict with his former agent, Werner Helleckes, who had taken possession of it over a financial disagreement.
In the years that followed, the trophy surfaced multiple times on platforms like eBay, drawing bids as high as 600,000 euros. Despite Ailton’s efforts to halt these sales, the trophy remained out of reach.
Homecoming After Two Decades
Now, after 19 long years, a major breakthrough has occurred. The 52-year-old Ailton was recently seen on Instagram, joyfully holding the top scorer cannon once again. His relief was evident in both his expressions and his words.
“I am incredibly happy that it has returned to me after 19 years,” Ailton shared with ‘Bild’. “It means everything to me, and I will never part with it again.”
The former striker elaborated on how the trophy shifted ownership during the legal turmoil, moving from Helleckes to yet another representative, leading to further disputes.
A Hard-Won Treasure
Eventually, Ailton was presented with an opportunity to retrieve the cannon through a settlement, which he eagerly accepted. “I seized this chance,” he stated. “Such a trophy is one of a kind.” He chose to keep the amount he spent on it private, declaring, “How much I paid will remain my secret.”
