Brighton’s Change of Heart Over Tribute Wall Following Fan Outrage
Club Responds to Fan Feedback
Brighton & Hove Albion has issued an apology after backlash from supporters regarding their proposal to dismantle a tribute wall at Amex Stadium.
The club had previously announced plans to take down their Heritage Tile Wall, which features over 2,500 tiles purchased by fans, citing that it was deteriorating due to age and weather impacts.
Virtual Fan Wall Proposal
To commemorate the club’s 125th anniversary, Brighton considered introducing a virtual “Fan Wall,” allowing fans to upload their photographs for a fee of £45. However, the response from fans was overwhelmingly negative.
A petition opposing the removal gathered more than 3,400 signatures, prompting a reevaluation by club management. Paul Barber, the chief executive and deputy chairman, confirmed that they will now install a physical wall as a replacement.
Apology from Club Management
Barber addressed the concerns of fans in a letter, acknowledging the distress caused by the club’s earlier decision. He expressed regret and noted that many tiles hold deep sentimental value for supporters.
“We recognize that the messages on these heritage tiles carry significant personal significance for many, and we aim to safeguard and honor these tributes,” Barber stated. He also clarified that the new physical replacement will not combine the old messages with the new “125 wall” as initially planned.
Brighton plans to implement the new structure by the 2026-27 season, ensuring that all current messages will be transferred without charge. Barber assured fans that the existing wall will remain intact until the season concludes.
Community Engagement
The club’s shift in strategy reflects their intention to be more responsive to the passions and concerns of their fanbase, aiming to foster a sense of community while honoring the club’s history.
Fans are encouraged to stay engaged with club developments and express their thoughts moving forward.
