Brentfords Quest for Europe

Brentford's Igor Thiago celebrates scoring for Brentford against Sunderland

Outstanding Brazilian and Surprising Success – Brentford’s European Aspirations

The Dream Scenario for Brentford

As the season approaches its midway point, Brentford is experiencing a remarkable turnaround. With a recent record of four victories in their last five matches, the supporters find themselves envisioning potential European escapades in Milan, Munich, and Barcelona for the upcoming season.

A commanding 3-0 victory against Sunderland propelled Keith Andrews’ team to the fifth position in the Premier League, a rank that previously guaranteed entry into the Champions League. Only title leaders Arsenal have amassed more points over the last six matches. Though there remains a considerable distance to cover, Brentford is firmly in contention for European football.

Such a situation was far from anticipated last summer.

Unexpected Change and Challenges

Following Thomas Frank’s departure to Tottenham after a fruitful seven-year tenure that saw the club ascend to the Premier League, significant changes ensued. Key players including club captain Christian Norgaard and goal-scoring duo Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa departed for Arsenal and Manchester United, respectively.

To replace Frank, set-piece coach Andrews was elevated to head coach, yet the team did not recruit a striker during the summer transfer window. Predictions hinted at a challenging season ahead, potentially leading to relegation. However, as January arrives, Brentford finds itself comfortably within the top five.

The Questions Arise

So, what has fueled this unexpected success?

Igor Thiago’s Incredible Performance

Brentford opted against signing another striker, partly due to Wissa’s late transfer, but they had confidence in their £30 million acquisition. Igor Thiago joined from Club Brugge in July 2024 for a club record fee, yet his debut season was marred by injuries, resulting in no goals across eight appearances.

Now, Thiago is making up for lost time, with his brace against Sunderland bringing his league tally to 16 goals—the highest by a Brazilian player in a single Premier League season. This feat is especially remarkable with 17 games still remaining.

“He’s brought a new energy to the team,” noted former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy on BBC Match of the Day. “He’s physically imposing, fast, and skilled, with a great ability to score.”

Among the top scorers in Europe, he ranks just behind Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, and Kylian Mbappe. Not only is the number impressive, but the timing has been critical for Brentford as well. His first goal against Sunderland marked his seventh opener of the season, underlining the value of a reliable scorer when it matters most.

Strong Statistics and Personal Journey

Prior to the match against Sunderland, Thiago’s shooting accuracy stood unmatched among players with 30 attempts, hitting a remarkable 59.1%. This consistent accuracy has translated into a steady stream of goals.

Considering his arduous background, where he worked as a bricklayer to support his family, it is perhaps no wonder that he manages pressure on the pitch with relative ease.

“The recruitment staff deserve huge credit for selecting not only talented players but also individuals with character,” Andrews proclaimed during Match of the Day. “Thiago has seamlessly integrated into the team and demonstrates a relentless drive to improve.”

Andrews – Silencing Doubters

While Igor Thiago shines, Brentford isn’t solely reliant on one player. Previously, the team had notable talents like Ivan Toney, Christian Eriksen, and others, but they were always viewed as a cohesive unit.

There were concerns about how Brentford would fare after losing Frank, especially with Andrews taking charge despite his lack of previous managerial experience. He faced scrutiny when appointed, transitioning from set-piece coach to team leader in the premier league.

Since taking over, Andrews has seen varying success, initially winning just one of his first five matches. However, impressive triumphs over Manchester United, Liverpool, and Newcastle have significantly boosted their European aspirations.

“We’re currently in excellent form and demonstrating confidence in our play,” Andrews remarked. “Our focus is on continuous improvement.”

With only eight points separating fourth from fifteenth place, maintaining their momentum is essential. Yet, for now, Brentford is exceeding expectations. The longer this streak continues, the closer they inch toward their dreams of playing in Europe.
