Mourinho Addresses Salary Speculation at Benfica
Jose Mourinho has refuted claims regarding his compensation at Benfica.
The renowned coach accepted the role at Benfica shortly after his departure from Fenerbahce.
Mourinho’s Response to Wages
In reply to queries from the media about his salary, Mourinho remarked, “If I had chosen to stay at home until the season concludes, I would likely have earned more than I will at Benfica.”
“I could have engaged in leisure activities and spent time with my family, perhaps traveling to the Algarve. It’s not accurate to suggest that I’m here without compensation.”
A New Challenge
Mourinho expressed a desire for a new challenge, stating, “I’m here with a certain apprehension because I genuinely love working. I’ve missed contending for titles, which is essential for Benfica. This presents a significant opportunity for me both professionally and personally.”
He added, “In essence, I want to ‘test myself’ and take risks. I seek to embrace both victory and defeat since they energize me and push me beyond my comfort zone.”
Conversations with Sporting and Porto Presidents
Responding to questions about interactions with the presidents of Sporting and Porto, Mourinho shared, “The discussions with presidents (Federico) Varandas and (Andres) Villas-Boas were straightforward. They wished me well but hoped I would finish in second place.”
He reflected, “Had I received an invitation to coach there, I’m uncertain if I would have accepted. However, given how swiftly I agreed to join Benfica, I would lean towards saying no.”
