Benatia Reveals His Reasons for Wanting to Meet De Bruyne Over Marseille

Olympique Marseille’s Recruitment Chief Reflects on Missed Transfers

Benatia Reflects on Near Deals

Mehdi Benatia, the sports director for Olympique Marseille, recently shared insights regarding some potential signings that slipped through the cracks this past summer. One notable name he mentioned is the former Manchester City star, Kevin de Bruyne, who ultimately joined Napoli.

Insights into Transfer Attempts

In an interview with RMC, Benatia stated, “De Bruyne? I made an effort, but by the time I approached him, he was already committed to Napoli.”

Thoughts on De Bruyne

He emphasised that his intention wasn’t to secure De Bruyne regardless of the cost, but rather to engage in a conversation with him to gauge his thoughts and feelings on a possible move.

“He was available, yet that doesn’t indicate he was genuinely attainable. The reality with free agents is complex… I believed, ‘This could really be a successful partnership with our manager.'”

Further Transfer Pursuits

Benatia went on to discuss other players he attempted to bring to the club. He highlighted his interest in Wesley Fofana from Chelsea, who also hails from Marseille.

“I considered his previous injuries, but I wondered if returning to Marseille could potentially be beneficial for him personally.”
