Barcelonas Request for Lewandowski to Cease Scoring During His First Season Explained

Lewandowski’s Transfer to Barcelona: A Closer Look

A New Chapter for Lewandowski

Robert Lewandowski, 37, transitioned from Bayern Munich to Barcelona in 2022, concluding an impressive eight-year run filled with numerous goals at the Bundesliga club.

The Financial Arrangement

As part of his transfer, Barcelona committed to pay an additional €5 million contingent on certain performance metrics, with €2.5 million owed to Bayern Munich if Lewandowski reached 25 goals in his debut La Liga season.

The Controversy Over Goal-Scoring

As Lewandowski neared 25 goals with only two matches remaining in the season and the La Liga title already secured, he received an unusual request, according to journalist Sebastian Staszewski.

“In a meeting attended by Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta, the club advised him to refrain from scoring any more goals,” Staszewski reported in Diario AS.

“The reasoning behind this request was financial; Barcelona needed to avoid triggering a €2.5 million bonus payment to Bayern if Lewandowski reached the 25-goal mark. With the championship already won, Barcelona opted to ask him to halt his scoring.”
