Departure from Al-Hilal
The Portuguese defender made his exit from Barcelona 18 months prior after a temporary transfer from Manchester City. Since the onset of the January transfer window, he has expressed a desire to leave Al-Hilal.
Official Announcement
On Tuesday afternoon, the Spanish giants made a formal announcement confirming the transfer and reintroducing the defender to the club.
“It’s official: Joao Cancelo is back as a Barca player. FC Barcelona and Al Hilal Saudi FC have reached an agreement for the Portuguese full-back’s loan until the season concludes. He will don the number 2 jersey,” read the club’s statement.
The signing ceremony occurred at the club’s headquarters and was attended by key figures, including FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta, first vice-president Rafael Yuste, board member Joan Soler, and Football Area Director Anderson Luis de Souza (Deco), along with Cancelo’s family.
Financial Maneuvers
Barcelona has activated an emergency injury clause to utilize 80% of Andreas Christensen’s salary cap for a replacement, which is fulfilled by Cancelo’s signing.
Upcoming Matches
The LaLiga leaders, Barcelona, are scheduled to face Racing in a Copa del Rey match on Thursday. Cancelo may have the opportunity to make his debut under manager Hansi Flick, who aims to strengthen the team’s defense.
Additionally, Barcelona confirmed that Cancelo will reclaim the number 2 shirt previously held by Pau Cubarsi, who has now switched to number 5.
