Barcelona Announces March 15 Elections as Laporta Competes Against Font Once More
FC Barcelona Announces Presidential Election Date
It is the earliest possible date for the election under the statutes of the Catalan club, as the current president was re-elected in March 2021, nearing the end of his five-year term.
Election Announcement
“During a board meeting today, we reached a consensus to hold the presidential elections for FC Barcelona on March 15,” announced Laporta in a video on the club’s website.
“We are confident that these elections will be exemplary and see robust participation.”
Candidates for Presidency
The 63-year-old Laporta is expected to face competition from Victor Font, who finished second in the last elections, securing 30 percent of the votes compared to Laporta’s 54 percent. Other candidates include Xavier Vilajoana and Marc Ciria.
Current Status and Challenges
After FC Barcelona’s victory over Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup earlier in January and their success in achieving a domestic treble last season, along with reaching the Champions League semi-finals, Laporta is considered the frontrunner for re-election.
However, during his 2021 campaign, he had promised to retain the legendary Lionel Messi at the club, a commitment he could not fulfill due to the club’s financial difficulties.
Throughout his presidency, Laporta has managed the protracted redevelopment and partial reopening of Camp Nou, the club’s iconic stadium.
