Mallorca Stretches Winless Streak to Five Matches with Draw Against Atletico Madrid

Mallorca extended their winless streak in La Liga to five games after managing a 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid, who have only secured one victory so far this season.

In a sunny setting in Mallorca, Atletico Madrid took charge from the beginning, even after their midweek efforts in the UEFA Champions League.

Early Pressure from Atletico

Giacomo Raspadori nearly caught goalkeeper Leo Roman off guard with a corner attempt, while Pablo Barrios’ powerful shot struck the post.

Within the first 15 minutes, a handball from Antonio Raillo due to sustained pressure from Atletico provided Julian Alvarez the opportunity to put the visitors ahead, but Roman’s spectacular full-length dive kept the score at zero.

Despite some early struggles, Mallorca began to find their rhythm. Johan Mojica’s dynamic run and cross to Takuma Asano, along with a long-range effort from Martin Valjent saved comfortably by Jan Oblak, were the closest attempts for the home side before the halftime break.

Clear opportunities were hard to come by as Mallorca lost Marash Kumbulla to injury before the half, while Diego Simeone’s team continued to exert pressure.

Second Half Developments

The second half saw a continuation of Atletico’s initial momentum, as Marcos Llorente’s early cross caused anxiety in the home defense. However, Mallorca began to show more intent.

Roman made another superb save to deny Giuliano Simeone, and with an hour played, the game remained locked in a draw.

Simeone opted for a triple substitution, bringing in forwards Alexander Sørloth and Antoine Griezmann to try and turn the game in his team’s favor.

Sørloth’s stay on the pitch was short-lived; he received a red card after a VAR review for a severe challenge just ten minutes after entering the field, igniting hope among the home supporters for a potential victory.

Late attempts by Mallorca failed to penetrate Oblak’s defenses, but Conor Gallagher appeared ready to deal a decisive blow with a brilliant shot, following a solid save from Roman against the impressive Llorente.

Inspired by these late efforts, Mallorca equalized in the final five minutes, as Jan Virgili delivered an exceptional cross, which was headed in by an unmarked Vedat Muriqi to earn a point.

Match Statistics

Despite securing a late equalizer, Mallorca has recorded their lowest points total at this stage of the season since the 2000/01 campaign, with their winless streak now extending to eight matches dating back to last season.
