Aston Villa Secures Europa League Advancement with Victory Over Fenerbahce
Aston Villa has solidified its position in the top eight of the Europa League following a narrow 1-0 win against Fenerbahce in Turkey, thanks to a first-half goal from Jadon Sancho.
Impressive European Form
This victory marks Villa’s sixth win in seven matches this season, further enhancing their remarkable performance in Europe while also ending Fenerbahce’s unbeaten streak at home. Sancho’s goal not only secured the win but also marked his first for the club, as he scored in front of a raucous crowd at Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.
The Premier League team faced numerous injury challenges this week, putting their resilience to the test in the second half. Goalkeeper Marco Bizot stepped up in the absence of Emi Martinez, making eight crucial saves to keep the team’s lead intact.
Disallowed Goals
Morgan Rogers had a goal ruled out for offside, but they were fortunate when Kemer Akturkoglu’s equalizing attempt was also disallowed by VAR. With a spot in the round of 16 already confirmed, Villa’s upcoming match against RB Salzburg will serve as merely a formality.
Match Highlights
The game started with Villa looking energetic. In their first significant approach, Rogers executed a back heel to Ollie Watkins, whose shot was blocked by Mert Müldür. Former Villa players Jhon Durán and Marco Asensio combined outside the penalty area, with the latter’s shot easily gathered by Bizot.
The atmosphere turned tense in the stadium when Villa took the lead in the 25th minute. Following some precise passing, Matty Cash delivered a cross that was diverted by Ismail Yüksek’s head, allowing Sancho to nod the ball past goalkeeper Éderson.
Missed Opportunities
Villa had chances to extend their lead before halftime, with Rogers setting up Sancho for a potential second goal, only for Milan Skriniar to make a critical block.
Unai Emery’s side aimed to catch Fenerbahce off-guard after the break, as Tyrone Mings’ attempt went off target and Emi Buendia was unable to score after rounding Éderson. Meanwhile, Bizot made a stunning save to keep the score at 1-0, denying Talisca from close range.
Despite Cash hitting the post after a long-range effort, Villa thought they had scored again when Rogers pushed a ball over the line. However, Sancho’s run was deemed offside just before the play.
Bizot continued his excellent performance with quick saves against Talisca and a long-range attempt from Yuksek. Fenerbahce experienced their own VAR frustrations when Akturkoglu’s rebound goal was disallowed due to an offside during the build-up, allowing Villa to secure the victory.
