Trial for Real Madrid Defender Over Non-Consensual Video Sharing
Legal Proceedings Initiated
Raul Asencio, a defender from Real Madrid, is set to face court proceedings relating to allegations of distributing a sexual video without the consent of those involved. This announcement was made by a court located on Spain’s Gran Canaria island on Thursday.
In addition to Asencio, three other individuals linked to Real Madrid’s youth team will also be summoned to the courtroom. These players are accused of filming and disseminating sexual content featuring two teenage females, one of whom is a minor, at a beach club in Gran Canaria during June 2023.
Context of Women’s Rights in Spain
The issue of women’s rights has gained significant attention in Spain, especially following the controversial incident where former football chief Luis Rubiales kissed national team player Jenni Hermoso without her consent after the recent World Cup final.
Prosecutorial Demands
The prosecutor is advocating for a sentence of two and a half years in prison for the 22-year-old Asencio due to violations of privacy laws, as he allegedly received and shared the footage with a friend, according to court documents.
Of the two victims, one has filed a complaint against all four players, while the other has chosen not to include Asencio in her accusations.
Asencio, who was part of Real’s youth squad at the time, has maintained his innocence and has not yet commented in response to inquiries directed to Real Madrid. It’s worth noting that two of the other accused players are no longer associated with the club.
In a statement made earlier in May, Asencio emphasized that he did not partake in any actions that infringed upon women’s rights regarding privacy and sexual autonomy. He stated that he is only being accused of allowing another individual to view the footage for a short period.
