Togo’s Asamoah Suffers Severe Neck Injury in Unfortunate Incident

Incident Details

Togo’s midfielder, Samuel Asamoah, experienced a catastrophic neck injury during a match in China, raising grave concerns about the possibility of paralysis.

The 31-year-old player, who represents Guangxi Pingguo, sustained the injury when he collided head-first with an LED advertising panel after being shoved by an opponent during a domestic league match held on Sunday.

On Monday, the club released a statement indicating that Asamoah’s condition could potentially lead to “high-level paraplegia,” as he had multiple fractures and incurred significant nerve damage.

Paraplegia refers to the loss of voluntary movement in the lower body.

The team later confirmed that Asamoah had undergone surgery and is currently in a stable state. They further noted, “Updates on his recovery will be provided as follow-up assessments are conducted.”

Player’s Background and Related Incidents

Zhang Zhixiong, a midfielder for Chongqing Tonglianglong, received a yellow card for the act of pushing Asamoah into the advertising board.

Asamoah, prior to his move to China in 2024, had a notable career primarily in Belgium and has earned six caps for the Togolese national team.

In a related incident, former Arsenal academy forward Billy Vigar tragically passed away last month following a serious brain injury. This occurred while he was playing for Chichester City FC in the Isthmian League Premier Division, an injury suspected to have occurred after crashing into a concrete wall by the pitch, although this has not been officially confirmed.
