Arsenal Explores Wembley for Stadium Expansion

Internal Discussions Underway

Arsenal Football Club is currently engaged in preliminary conversations regarding the potential expansion of the Emirates Stadium’s capacity. These discussions are in the early stages, and no concrete plans have been finalized yet. However, the idea of hosting home games at Wembley Stadium during construction has emerged as a topic of consideration.

Historical Context

The Gunners previously played their Champions League matches at the old Wembley Stadium during the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 seasons. Similarly, Tottenham Hotspur used the current Wembley as their home ground for several seasons—starting with Champions League matches in 2016-17 and continuing through 2017-18 and most of 2018-19—while their new stadium was being built.

Upcoming Anniversary

Next year marks two decades since Arsenal transitioned from their former Highbury location to the Emirates. It is reported that the conversations around expansion have included options for rearranging seating to accommodate several thousand additional spectators, aimed at keeping the club competitive with other top stadiums across the nation.

Current Stadium Capacity

Currently, Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium has a capacity of 60,704, placing it as the fifth largest among English football venues. For perspective, the largest stadium belongs to Manchester United, with a capacity of 74,879, followed by Tottenham (62,850), West Ham United (62,500), and Liverpool (61,276).
