Arsenal and Crystal Palace Adjusted Premier League Schedule to Alleviate Fixture Overload

Match Rescheduling Announcement

The Premier League has decided to reschedule matches involving Arsenal and Crystal Palace in December to help alleviate fixture congestion.

Originally, Arsenal was set to visit Everton and Crystal Palace was to face Leeds United at 14:00 GMT on Sunday, December 21. This has now been changed to 20:00 on Saturday, December 20.

This adjustment allows both teams an extra day of preparation ahead of their EFL Cup quarter-final scheduled for December 23.

Considerations for EFL Cup Tie

The EFL had originally scheduled the cup match for December 16. However, this was altered to prevent Palace, who are also in the Conference League, from playing three games in just five days.

Despite the new arrangement, Palace will still face two matches within three days, as their Conference League game against Finnish club KuPS is planned for December 18.

Palace’s request to play their European match a day earlier was denied by UEFA, which is said to be due to concerns about maintaining the integrity of the competition.

Arsenal officials stated they opted against a potential EFL Cup fixture on Christmas Eve, citing the negative consequences it would have on fans and club personnel.

The Gunners have also pledged to offer subsidized transportation for supporters traveling to Merseyside on December 20, with a fare set at £10.

Understanding the Changes

The decision to adjust the fixtures comes in light of requests from both teams. It is believed that both clubs wanted to ensure equal recovery time before their cup confrontation, with television scheduling also reportedly playing a role.

While a later kick-off time at 20:00 raises concerns regarding travel logistics for fans, the Premier League emphasized that the well-being of the players was the primary factor guiding this decision.

A focus on player welfare is a priority for the Premier League, which is why we granted the requests from Arsenal and Crystal Palace to shift their respective matches. This adjustment reflects the scheduling of games from other competitions that limit adequate recovery time for players,

the league stated.

Additional Context

  • Several challenges stemming from the extended UEFA competitions impact the domestic calendar;
  • Ongoing fixture congestion is a concern for clubs involved in multiple competitions.

The rescheduling demonstrates the league’s efforts to balance competitive integrity and player welfare amid increasingly crowded schedules.
